“MADAME SAVAGE”: RECOVERING LADY ELEANOR SAVAGE

Updated: Feb 15, 2021

In 2010, while exploring American archives for Tudor portraits, I came across a portrait titled 'Madame Savage' in the collection of Louisiana State University. The picture was attributed to Frederico Zuccaro by the collection, though scholar Quincy Lee attribute it to Eworth. My primary goal in this finding was to explore and identify Madame Savage, and secondarily to offer some very preliminary thoughts on attribution. I have subsequently changed my mind about the hand I believe behind this picture, but leave my original finding and catalogue entry here as it otherwise finally puts a name to the face of Lady Eleanor Savage (née Cotgreave). As I am including some pictures that have been previously attributed to Eworth in the catalogue, I have also created a catalogue entry available for this picture, also included below.
